Belle Isle Marsh, 2011, oil and pastel on cotton, 24 x 30

I spent months wandering around the Town of Winthrop, Massachusetts, drawing and painting every day. I painted Belle Isle Marsh several times, often including Orient Heights and the Madonna Queen of the Universe National Shrine (see buff titanium line on the left-top of the hill).

I painted this very quickly on a raw piece of cotton using mostly oil sticks and pastel. I had been told and read that oil on raw fabric is a bad idea, but I did it anyway. The effects of the oil bleeding through are obvious in this photo. Its been a while since I've seen the actual painting, I have no idea what it looks like now.
