The Shoe Shine Boys, 2013, oil on cotton

18 x 18

Prayer and keeping your shoes clean are both very important in Sudan. At the mosque one can accomplish both. Very young boys, I was told mostly orphans from neighboring Uganda, sit outside the mosques in tattered clothing while men dressed in snow white robes toss their shoes at them as they enter. There are many kinds of shoes to choose from in Sudan, my favorite are the foam ones molded to look like any other shoe. The architecture of the mosques also varies.

It's important for a picture to have lines in it, in one form or another. Balancing color comes naturally for some people, but drawing great lines takes practice.
